Many of us are struggling through the days, trying to find relief while dealing with unprecedented circumstances of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID -19). Both adults and children can have strong reactions to the uncertainty that lies ahead. Everyone responds to stress differently, and it is important to be able first to identify the symptoms.

COMMON ANXIETY SYMPTOMS

  • Trouble sleeping.

  • Lack of focus.

  • Cold sweats.

  • Chest pains.

  • Nausea.

  • Dizziness.

  • Heart palpitations.

Once you can identify the signs of anxiety, you can take care of yourself and your family and friends. When we help others, we can help ourselves. Knowing that you have inner resources like empathy, compassion, and understanding enables you to see yourself as strong and empowered. We move away from feeling like a victim to being assertive and resilient. Resiliency is something anyone can learn to grow in themselves or children.

Steps to Manage Anxiety and Build Resilience

  1. Know the facts. Choose resources from well-respected medical groups like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

  2. Establish a routine. Both adults and children feel secure when routines are followed, as it gives us a sense of security and stability. Now is the time to set a schedule and stick to it.

  3. Stay positive—practice optimism and gratitude. When we keep a more positive sense of mind, we feel better and more relaxed, which in turn affects those around us.

  4. Connect with others. Use technological platforms that connect you to friends and families. Host a movie night online, watch together, and then have a discussion afterward. Many holistic practitioners are offering online yoga, meditation, and mindfulness classes. Grab your kids and take a class.

Taking the initiative to cultivate a routine makes us feel less helpless. Any small steps we can take will help us feel more in control. One of the best things we can say to ourselves is WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. Knowing we are not alone can help us to feel less isolated. Finally, remember to breathe. When we take a few long deep breaths, we can calm our nervous system and live more peacefully.
